Added value for mechanical engineering companies in the region

The mechanical engineering sector is a key industry in the Bergisches Land region and is both a high-quality supplier in the global market and an attractive employer in the regional context. We want to further build on these strengths with a network for the mechanical engineering sector.

The network is establishing a structure that offers concrete added value for companies in the region that are involved in mechanical engineering. As part of the network, you will not only receive inspiration, but you will also be able to actively initiate projects and help position the industry both domestically and abroad.

Our projects

The network regularly organizes networking events to which members and interested companies in the industry are invited. The meetings take place directly at the member companies’ premises, where they can introduce themselves to the participants as hosts and present current topics in short presentations. The networking events also offer the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the host company and visit the production facilities.

In cooperation with the Bergisch Land Mechanical Engineering Network, various companies active in the field of special machine construction at the University of Wuppertal provide comprehensive and practical insights into the field of special machine construction. In the elective course “Special Machine Construction,” students can learn about the construction of a special machine, its calculation, design, the underlying legal principles, and project management in the field of special machine construction.

Topics in the current winter semester (2022/2023):

  • Implementation of the Machinery Directive CE conformity assessment procedures
  • Construction kits for special machine construction
  • Project/innovation management in special machine construction
  • Project management of the future
  • Machine elements
  • Machine axes and their components
  • Sensors and camera technology
  • Magazining
  • Automation and feeding Grinding technology
  • Product liability
  • Practical examples

As a member of the Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board, you can actively contribute to the design of an optimal and requirements-based engineering education for the region. This is the start of an intensive collaboration between the university and regional companies.

The Mechanical Engineering Network is currently developing a special lecture series for the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Here, member companies can get creative in the education of “their” students.

Since 2017, the Bergisch Land Mechanical Engineering Network has been represented at the joint exhibition stand of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digital and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia) at the Hannover Messe, the world’s leading trade fair for industry. In addition to exchanging ideas with other mechanical engineering networks in the state, the visit to the trade fair serves to position and market the network both domestically and internationally.

For member companies, participation in a joint stand offers financial advantages and greater visibility among industry-relevant audiences.

The mechanical engineering industry is an attractive employer in the region. The benefits for trainees and engineers are manifold, as small and medium-sized enterprises offer young people many opportunities and development prospects. The companies in the Bergisch Land Mechanical Engineering Network are working together on models to secure skilled workers so that they can continue to score highly as strong employers in the competition for talent.

The member companies exchange skilled workers among themselves in order to make the workplace more varied and attractive for employees. In other companies, valuable experience can be gained and a broader perspective can be gained. This form of exchange also represents significant added value for trainees.

The network organizes a series of events that give network members the opportunity to exchange specialist knowledge. To this end, so-called “regulars’ tables” are offered for specialists and managers.

For example, the group considered how machine planning could be made comparable across individual companies. This would make it possible to see exactly where a company’s strengths and weaknesses lie in comparison to other companies. In particular, the focus here was on design, construction, and purchasing (mechanical and electrical). The topics of cybersecurity and data security are also being addressed jointly.
